How come the Martian atmosphere has not been stripped away by solar wind if it is not protected by a magnetic field?

Does Mars have strong magnetic poles that can be used for navigation, in the same way that Earth does?

I have heard scientists speculate on the prospect of someday 'terraforming' Mars to make it suitable for human habitation. How feasible is this idea, realistically, when Mars lacks a strong magnetic field, which is necessary in our understanding of physics, in order to hold a habitable atmosphere around the planet?
