If Mars is red, why do we imagine that the Martians are green?

Is it conceivable to imagine that an alien civilisation could have once existed on Mars many millions of years ago, but somehow (war, climate change, planetary evacuation etc) there is no longer any trace of them? If we were to all disappear over night, then all it would take would be a few million years to remove all traces of human society.
